They started in January, under pressure from the U.S. government's safety authorities, the media and numerous individual and class-action lawsuits resulting from thousands of complaints, hundreds of accidents and dozens of fatalities over several years.
Since then, the identified defects and recalls have mushroomed to include more than a dozen Toyota models covering over 40 model years. Some of the models have been recalled for more than one defect, which include loss-of control due to unintended acceleration, brakes, power steering, drive shaft and as of yesterday, leaky oil hoses.
