Maybe it was an indirect reference to what has been described by shaken owners of some Toyota models as 'soft', unresponsive brakes - a lag of a second or two between pushing down on the brake pedal and having the brakes actually engage - which lead to yet another another huge recall.

I'm pretty sure that ad is promoting Toyota 4wds in general. I love that ad hey :-) It doesn't really mention a specific car, but it shows "lesser" 4wds trying to get through the border patrol by putting Toyota badges on their cars, and then their cars break down in the desert. I think they're generally promoting the durability of Toyota 4wds.
