Your 5th-generation Tercel has the venerable Toyota "5E-FE" engine.
In 1995 this then all-new 1.5 L double overhead cam, inline 4 cylinder engine produced 93 hp and 100 ft·lb of torque. It was EPA rated at 45mpg on the highway with a 5 speed manual transmission, making it the most fuel-efficient four-cylinder car of it's time in the U.S.A.
This same engine was also used in..
'91-'99 Toyota Paseo
'95-'99 Toyota Tercel
Toyota's legendary Corolla and Echo vehicles also had 1.5L powerplants sharing *some* 5EFE parts, but with enough engine block/cylinder head differences and improvements to warrant different engine code designations.
The 5E-FE is a Great engine! Famed for being one of the most trouble-free Toyota powerplants, smooth-running, and easy to maintain.
