The recent massive recalls involving loss-of-control (unintended acceleration), brakes, steering, drive shafts, etc. stared early this year. Toyota acted only when it faced severe pressure from the media, U.S. government, NHTSA, SEC, and several impending lawsuits relating to hundreds of 'sudden loss of control' accidents and dozens of fatalities. However, from 2004-07, Toyota recalled over 9.3 million vehicles for a variety of defects, representing 10.1 % of all of its vehicles on the road ( vs only 6.8 % for G.M. and 2.5 % for Chrysler). The loss-of control problem was recognized in Japan in 2006, when the Japanese government accused Toyota of " improper business practices for failing, over eight years, to disclose and act upon reports of design flaws implicated in loss-of-control incidents."
So Toyota not only has a long history of major recalls, but also of denying problems to avoid making recalls.
