Default Any suggestions on how to prove that an old Toyota accident was caused by accelerator problems?

My mother and her cousin were traveling on I-95 in Elkton, Maryland a little more than two years ago. Her cousin was driving my parents' Camry when he suddenly lost control and went slamming into a guard rail. At the time, we all had conjecture about what might have happened. They knew a white van was nearby but didn't feel that they hit it. Maybe a tire blew? Her cousin kept saying he was being attentive and really didn't know what happened.

The police took statements and created an accident report, I assume. I have told my mother how she can get that, assuming there is a report. My mother was hospitalized briefly and the car was totaled. Her cousin was not injured badly, but he has not driven a car since then because he was traumatized and began thinking that at 60 years old, maybe he shouldn't drive anymore. He lives in Brooklyn, so he can get by with driving only rarely.

Any other suggestions on how to prove that sudden acceleration may have been the cause when you no longer have the vehicle? I'm assuming there's not much to get anymore other than the accident report.
