The light means there is problem recorded somewhere in your computers. You have to read the ECU with a scan tool to get the failure code (DTC = diagnostic failure code). Then you can clear out the stored code and start the car and see if it comes back. If it does you then better fix whatever part is indicated - or the light will just stay on all the time. If it doesn't come back - maybe the problem was intermittent and is gone - at least for now.

The lamp isn't the problem. Get an OBD2 check, fix what it says is wrong and then use an OBD2 scanner to erase the trouble code. There is another way, and I'm afraid if I tell you, you'll be temped to doit without repairing the car. The light will come on again as long as the problem is still there. Check engine light means to check the engine, not check the light.
