Default Toyota Rav4 major Transmission problems?

i own a toyota rav4 2002.....it has been known by toyota that this model has had problems with its ecu.....which makes the car shift at the wrong revs\times, at times at traffic lights or merging into highways the car completely looses power, sometimes at traffic lights it completely stalls leaving u completely vulnerable to other cars....it sometimes to revs to over 4000 revs and then suddenly engages into gear, which results in un intended accelaration. this might causeaccidents especially in congested traffice. i took the car to the toyota dealer in Acton, MA they told me i had to pay 4500 dollars to fix their own design flaw, which is popestrous. There are soo many blogs that complain about this, type "rav4 transmission problem" on google. you are bound to find thousands of blogs compaining about this. i'd like to think that this government does indeed take care of its people\ looking out for them and fighting for them in battles they can not win alone. All i ask for is for Toyota to be held responsible for their own flaws. They have put millions of people in serious risk, this is not something that should be overlooked, especially after discovery of their faulty acceleration pedals. This is what you get for trying to cut cost and then making the consumers pay for this mistake. Its high time Toyota came clean about their shady designs. Everyone and i mean everyone should boycott Toyota products until they once again become the trustworthy and reliable company it once was

-Do not buy the Coffin car

i will file a law suite against them...it doesnt have to last long. All i need it to do is last long enough for the media to hear about it, and down comes the most pathetic auto car maker in history

i fixed my own ecm....it cost me 1100 to buy it from a 'respectable dealer'....but anyways a car that has only 81000 miles on it should not be having transmission problems. i agree parts wear out and stuff but the ecm? unless it breaks down when i am using or playing with it then i wouldnt mind, but if it was broken even before i bought it, then i have a huge problem with toyota. this company will fall onto itself soon. i would advice anyone not to buy one. they will soon run out of value(toyota trashy cars). (hoping to trade mine soon for the much better Murano)

You're one millions who are coming to the belated realization that Toyota's quality is largely the product of advertising and image, with little substance in recent years to back it up. Unfortunately it's taking extreme circumstances to convince some diehards.

I had the same exact problem. I had a 2001 Rav4 L, and the transmission got completely screwed up until eventually i couldnt drive past 40 mph because it wouldnt shift to the next gear. I also couldnt reverse and had to push it out of the parking spot. Me and my dad realized that it would be more expensive than the car itself to repair so I got another car. Because the value of old used Rav4's are very little and the price of this particular repair is so expensive i recommend sabing up for a new/used car. Its dangerous driving a car like that.

If they didnt issue a recall for the cars problem, Yes you have to pay for it to be repaired. I would go to a place like AAMCO or MR Transmissoin because it may be cheaper. Its just like Fords 4.6 v8 intake manifold leaking, they never issued a recall (yet they knew of the problem) and I had to pay $900 bucks to fix my Grand Marquis intake

I've heard of all these problems you mention with the Rav4. And I will tell you this-- for myself...I am ashamed that I was ever taken in by such a company of greed and lies. The good people of America trusted Toyota, and we have been deliberately, and defiantly abused by them. I am ashamed to own and drive, or be seen in a Toyota. They are a disgrace and a massive insult to the United States. I've never hated a car company so much in my life. They are detested nation wide now, and If I had my way, the president of Toyota would be saying "I'm sorry".....behind bars.

Yes there is a service bulletin about the ecm causing this issue but you have to understand nothing lasts forever. It is not a design flaw because it worked from the time you purchased it until now. It is a worn out part just like any other part on your vehicle. With that being said $4500 is really really high. The ecm should be less than 1k and the labor should be no more than 1hr. If you would like to repair this vehicle yourself it is very easy. The ecm is located behind the glove box and only a couple of nuts hold it in. Just unplug the old one plug in the new one and you should be good to go. There is a possibility that the transmission is damaged and may need replacement but in my experience the ecm usually fixes the problem.

I think this is a very hasty statement Alan. Every car has problem one day. Sometimes you just have to explore the issue and find a solution. I am familiar with the problem because I am an owner RAV4 2003. If you have any difficulties the dealer offer to replace the ECM but dealer does not care about our money , does he?I found an opportunity to repair the ECM. These guys were near me in Van Nuys CA. One day I got my car repaired . Price of the service is far from the dealer offers. they have wide range of service . Here you could see everything Module Repair Pro INC
