I would guess that the engine and transmission moved in the accident and broke a mount loose, because they are all make of rubber.
This may be allowing the shift arm on the transmission, that the shift cable attaches to, to be restricted by the body or something.
I would get underneath, while someone shifts back and forth.
(with the engine off).
If the shifter itself can move and is not physically blocked, then another possibility could be that you broke a transmission cooler line to the radiator, and you lost so much fluid that it can't shift any more.
Check the transmission dipstick with the engine running.
