i think that my alternator might of locked up?

Default i think that my alternator might of locked up?
how can an alternator lock up ??? my car won't start and i bought a brand new fricking $100 battery and the car still doesn't start ...and the old battery was completely dead...the battery light is on in my car..my dad think its the alternator froze and the car won't start....the alternator is the same one manufactered one that came with the car, its a 1997. the belt is still on the alternator, and its really tight, if i press down on it, it doesn't even make a slight bounce back. does the alternator help turn the engine ??? any suggestions ?????

The alternator only charges the battery on a car, it does not help to start the car. If this alternator has been on the car from day one, then that is the problem. You need a new alternator. The Armature on the one you have must be worn down so bad that it just ain't working and it won't recharge your new battery as you drive.
