89 4Runner with nearly 400,000 km?

I`m thinking about buying an 89 4Runner with 390,000 km on it. The body is immaculate, and it has a lift with offroad tires and a bunch of expensive audio stuff.

The guy`s asking $3000 but said he`d go down to 2000 if he can`t sell it.

I`m in university and want a decent 4x4 without spending too much money, but I know toyotas can run for a long time. I was thinking about an engine swap somewhere down the road, but am not sure what that would cost.

I`m not experience with mechanics either, but can learn.

I`m trying to reason if this is worth it or not.

A mechanic`s opinion would be great.

I had a NEW 1986 truck, with extended cab, and the same engine as the 4 Runner. I AM SORRY that I ever got rid of it. Ahhh the memories.

When I see other Toyotas from the 80's, the body is always rusted out badly, especially around the rear tires. You are lucky the body on this one is good.

You will need a new catalytic converter soon. And this car will NOT give you good gas mileage. Big, heavy, big tires, lots of wind resistance.

A good repair booklet for this one is CHILTON #7035 Toyota trucks plus 4-Runner.

That car is old enough to vote. Give them $1500. 250,000 miles is too much unless the maintenance has been kept up religiously.
