Can you add 4 wheel drive on a Tacoma that is a prerunner?

Is it possible to buy a prerunner and then later add 4x4 on it? Years would be 01-04. If its possible how hard and costly is it?

The trucks we have been looking at are about 5-7k plus more for a 4x4 vs. a prerunner. I was thinking if we did the work our selves to put in a 4x4 later on it might cost less. However I know the parts are costly for tacomas.

Yes you can do this. It is a bit of a "where there is a will, there is a way" situation. You need a transfer case, front running gear (axles & such), shifter, 4X4 button, wiring, and some other things that I have not thought of. The problem here is that Toyota parts are expen$ive. It would be MUCH more cost effective to purchase the 4X4 from the beginning than to convert, even if you luck into the perfect donor truck at the right price.

it can be done, but you will need alot fo parts and custom modification.

you will need a new drivshaft, for the tranny to the transfer, transfer to the back, and transfer to the front.

so you will need those and all the mounts.

then a shift selector for 2wd high and low, and 4wd high and low, so cut holes for all that and the all the connections. also, you will need the whole front suspension set up, so new brakes, everything up front so it fits the cv axles.

you might also need a different ecu and oil pan and maybe tranny...

it is possible, but yes, alot of work, and room for error, therefore ruining the truck. i say just buy the stock truck in 4x4 form
