What are the first few things I should do to increase my 92' camry's horsepower?

few free thing you can do

1. advance the timing

2. remove the resonator

3. get rid of excess weight such as, sound insulation, spare tire, back seats

things you will have to dish out on, but not a lot of money

1. A good tune up/service will restore lost horsepower (hp is lost over time)

2. cold air intakes (generally pretty cheap and easy to install

3. New muffler (dont go with a fat pipe, you will get laughed at)

You are not going to squeeze much extra out of the 2.2L engine w/o major modifications, but you can get a bit extra by replacing the intake and exhaust w/aftermarket items, fooling with the timing a bit, and finally and more expensively, change the cams.

Before you go and do that, keep in mind that the camry's suspension is not up to performance driving. The Camry's strength is in its smoothness and quietness. This will be trying to change the nature of the beast. To get a decently performing car you may fine it more cost effective and satisfying to sell the Camry and puchase a more performance oriented car.
