The thing to do is have an OBD2 check done. The check engine light means to do that. Car part stores often do OBD2 checks free and dealers charge $50 and up for this service, without fixing anything. That's how you get an answer to what's wrong with your engine. If you checked the timing and it's wrong, suspect the timing chain and tensioner- but this is rare defect in that engine. If you only think the timing is off, you'll need to check it to verify the actual condition. The mechanic thinks the 9 year old spark plugs are OK? See a different mechanic, or just put in some new platinum plugs.
