the exception is going from reverse to park at low speeds, any faster and the gear will grind. you can not shift from neutral to reverse though. it will lock you out. so if you are traveling forward, you can switch back and forth between the drive and neutral gears but not park or reverse. you would have to press the release button on the gear selector handle AND stop completely. the reverse and park gears are not synchronized to the other gears, which means if you were to try to override it, they would make a scary grinding noise and keep popping out. if the locking system fails, you would have to push that lever with enough force to stop the car. ( the weight of the car multiplied by the mph.) the car would have slowed down from that force. hope this makes you feel safer.
if it makes it easier to picture, think of the parking mechanism as a point that goes in between the teeth of the gears. if you are going fast, it would just pop out until it grinds enough to slow that gear down. but again, we are talking impossible forces. like 60,000 lbs with one hand. continuous.
