The pre-1993 Supras were more of grand tourers than actual sportscars. Supras have always had an incredibly reliable inline 6 engine (- not a V6). These cars actually shared their powerplants with the Toyota Cressidas of their respective vintages. If you want some sportiness out of a pre 1993 Supra, my advice would be to buy the 1987-1992 Toyota Supra Turbo (mk3). They were rated at 200-230 horsepower- which made it a more powerful car than the other pre-1993s. This model only has one issue- blowing headgaskets( non-turbos didn't suffer this fate. Don't let that discourage from buying one though. Look for one that has had the metal headgasket installed on it since the flimsy factory ones are the ones that were prone to blowing. Noone really knows if that was the actual issue but Toyota actually had the torque setting too low on the headgasket. It has been discovered by many that if the original headgasket had been torqued down at a higher setting it would've never blown in the first place. I say go with the metal headgasket with the higher torque setting. That should render this engine nearly bulletproof. There is still aftermarket support and many fan websites/forums dedicated to this Supra.
Of the other two cars you mentioned, I would go with the Miata. The RX7 is an incredible car but too many owners have like of knowledge on how to maintain a rotary engine. Because of that, many of these have tons of problems. There are many RX7s with over 200K miles on the original rotary engines so they are reliable enough. However, as a used car, it's a major hit or miss. Miatas are just easy- to maintain and repair. Maintenance costs for a Miata are low (except for if the top needs replacing) and the are better on gas than the other two you're looking at. Miatas are extremely reliable. They have such a good reliability record that if you didn't know the ccar, you'd think it was a Toyota. Just my $.02.
