My mechanic says I need a "brake booster" for my 2003 Toyota Sequoia. What is a brake booster?

Default My mechanic says I need a "brake booster" for my 2003 Toyota Sequoia. What is a brake booster?
I tried to look it up online but when I would go to the web sites nothing came up as far as being able to order a brake booster? What is it and where can I get one online?















My car is making a noise like there is an air leak. Sounds like it's coming from the car speakers? I took my car in to get spark plugs put in and the guy says I need a brake booster? The brake light has been on for a few days so there's definitely something not right.

open the hood and look at the rear of the motor, that metal wall is called the firewall. Mounted on the firewall behind the drivers side tire and above the steering rod is a coke can sized container that holds brake fluid. This brake fluid reservoir is attached to the brake booster.















The brake booster is what gives your vehicle power brakes. If it weren't for the booster all your braking power would come from manual pressure on the pedal and that will make your brakes feel very weak.

Before jumping in and buying a booster, it would be good to be sure it is the booster itself that is at fault. Hissing is not a very common symptom for the booster - more often it is the check valve or hose that connect the vacuum to the booster that hisses. A second opinion would be worth while. Boosters are usually several hundred dollars and another $100-$200 to replace.
