Default Using 10w-40 oil on a 01 toyota corolla?
I have a 2001 toyota corolla with 150,000 miles in the car. I have a next door neighboor who happens to be a toyota mechanic and told me to use 10w-40 oil instead of 5w-30. Is this true? Should I use 10w-40 instead of 5w-30

What does the owners manual say? If the engineers wanted a different weight of oil in the car based on climate or mileage, it would be in there. But that thinner oil is needed more than ever to get to the parts of the engine as fast as possible. The channels in which the oil travels in were designed with that weight in mind. The car has lasted 150K miles on 5W-30 so why wouldn't it continue to do so? I say stick with the recommended oil until the car dies.

No - stay with 5W-30. It may get burned faster (or it may not), but doubling the viscosity has the same effect on flow as cutting the oil pressure in half. In practice it may not make a difference (especially if you are using synthetic) but it is not a good idea and becomes a bad idea in the winter.

I agree with Michael, Stick with what is called for in the manual.. I also suggest a synthetic. But thats just me.































If Toyota wanted you to change the weight of the oil at a certain mileage it would be in the manual or there would be a service bulletin calling for it.

I would suggest switching to 10W-40 High-Mileage Motor Oil. I recommend Valvoline High-Mileage, however Toyota would recommend using Conventional 5W-30.
