simple bolt ons such as a cold air intake, exhaust... all that stuff will help make a little more power and increase gas mileage

generally if you manipulate the engine or its specs, it results in real screwup and costly repairs. Only the manufacturer can do that. I used to have a 92 corolla with manual transmission, until 2007. It went over 200,000 miles. But the acceleration and 0 to 60 still took time. The worst part was when the light turns green and i put the car on 1st gear to set it in motion -- it was so slow. BMW's passed me right away

That 4AFE is not the right platform to build on. It won't give you what you're looking for unless you boost it (ie. turbo or supercharging)- which means the entire engine will have to be built to handle boosting. Intake, exhaust, headers are a big waste of money. People tend to believe that they are getting a little power but they don't feel it. they just run their cars harder. Your best bet is to go with a 4AGE swap. That's good for a good 30 horsepower over your current engine. Not only that, there are different variations and there is a good aftermarket of performance parts for that engine. you will be alot happier with the 4AGE and it will be a good match since that engine was made for the Corolla anyway.
