'96 camry - is the differential fluid sealed from the transaxle? How can i tell?

Is there some other place to check your differential fluid or is it all checked via the tranny dipstick? On my 4 cylinder Camry the physical dip stick for the tranny fluid reads "to check differential fluid consult the owers manual" when I look it up I havent been able to find anything.

That is a VERY good question. Toyota uses a mixture of transaxles and some have separate differentials and some do NOT. Maybe one way to tell in your owners manual is to go to the "capacities" specifications and see if they show a capacity for the differential. And if there are different transmissions - usually the capacity of diff will be associated with the trans - if it is separate.

Another way to tell is how MANY drain plugs does it have. The trans will have a drain plug in the stamped steel pan. If the cast metal case next to the pan of the trans has a plug in the bottom - that will be the differential compartment. If it has a drain plug - then it will HAVE a fill plug. That plug will be located in a nearly inaccessible place on the back of the diff case several inches up. To check the diff oil you need to get that plug out and the general spec is vehicle level and fluid w/in 5 mm of the bottom of the plug hole.

The 4 cylinder has separate differential fluid, the 6 does not. To check the fluid on the 4 cylinder transaxle the car has to be raised up level. There is a plug about half way up the differential cover on the very back of the transaxle. Remove the plug with a 17mm wrench and the fluid level should be at the level of the bottom of the hole. The differential takes the same fluid as the transmission.
