if my wheels currently have 225/50R16 can i go up to 245/50R16?

i own and drive a Toyota Supra Turbo, and id like to put wider tires on the rear because A: it would look sick, and B: it would increase my traction.

my concern is that the wider tire will not fit right and have weak sidewalls or something stupid. and i dont have enough money to keep getting new wheels and tires.

i am a mechanic, but i dont know crap about tires.

its not very old, 87 turbo model. i dont know what width wheels are on it. they are the saw blade type. i would get MK4 wheels but i cant afford it.

You must have one of the really old bangers from the 80's when they had 225/50VR16's all-round. If that is the case then wider tires on the rear are not what the car was designed for. It may (or may not - probably not) look "sick" and will handle sick as well, pushing like an old milk wagon. At only 7.0 inches wide the wheels are far from optimal. You may squeze that tire on there but just barely. A 245 section-width tire should be mounted on at least a 8.0-inch wide wheel or preferably 9.0 like Toyota did with the same tire size on later Supra models.

You can probably go up to a 245 wide - but i would go to the 245/45 16. The 245 is 10 mm wider per side so the rims can handle it ok. 3/8 inch per side. the 45 aspect will keep it from growing so much in overall diameter. If you are concerned about cornering this may tend to push your handling into understeer since you are probably raising the rear trim height a bit and increasing grip at the rear. Raising front air pressure several psi and lowewring the rear by a couple psi may neutarlize this. it will be tricky. Say try 35 front 30 rear and see how it works.
