Is the check engine light on? If you are having a misfire it would be on. I am thinking that you may have a bad coil from your description of the symptoms. It is easy to diagnose but you have to be able to read the codes. If you have a code P0302, it means cylinder number 2 is missing. Swap the coil in a cylinder with such a code with a one that has no code. If there is no P0304, which would be cylinder number 4, swap those 2. Clear the codes and if you now have P0304 and not P0302 the coil is bad for certain. If you have a 6 cylinder engine and the misfire is on the rear bank of cylinders, this is easier said than done.
