Oil change for a pick up truck?

Default Oil change for a pick up truck?
06 Tacoma pre-runner. Dealer changed the oil and filter prior to sale six months ago. They say I need a oil change because of six month/5000 miles. I am retired and use the truck very little, six months/1000 miles. Should I go ahead and change oil every six months? If I wenrt to synthentic could I go 12 monhs?

I have a Dodge Dakota that I drive 5000 miles per year. I've changed oil once per year for the past 4 years and have no reason to believe it is not perfectly adequate using a semi-synthetic oil. I've had good mechanics tell me that I am quite correct in my belief regarding oil changes. Now I will admit that the poor quality reputation of the Toyota engine might cause you to want to change oil twice per year just to be on the safe side.

If you have any sort of warranty or oil change plan with them they will void it if you don't change your oil on their schedule

Generally oil should be changed 6months or 5000 miles which ever comes first. Even if never driven, oil will still wear out over time, it will build up sludge and lose its consistency. synthtic go for 8-9 months. as the truck gets older change mor frequent, my dads got an 87 4runner w/ over 220000 miles and still runs new with regular maintenance.

I'd go twice a year at least just to be on the safe side.
