Why does Lexus require premium fuel for the ES, while Toyota requires regular fuel for the Camry?

Well, it's because they really aren't the same car. Different trim, different engines.

Here are a few things to consider: The Lexus requires premium gasoline in its V-6 for maximum performance while the Camry?s V-6 recommends regular gasoline. Gas mileage is rated by the EPA at 19/27 mpg city/highway for the Lexus, which only comes with a V-6. The Camry XLE V-6 is 19/28 mpg while the four-cylinder XLE Camry is rated at 22/32 mpg.

If you read the engine stats, they are identical witht the exception of the horsepower rating. My guess is that in order for the Lexus to have that additional few horsepower, Toyota probably slightly detuned the 3.5 V6, making it possible to run the Camry V6 on regular fuel. I'm banking that the ES has a slightly higher compression ratio- which is why the car has 5 more horsepower and runs on premium fuel. Is the difference noticeable in performance? Most likely not, but when the consumer looks at that horsepower number, they will think that the ES is more than a dressed up Camry with different styling. This might not be the case, but it oftentimes is with all auto manufacturers.
