they have timing chains. 100 percent positive. they are idiots above me. that link the first guy gave is for a 3sge motor which didnt even come in the 2000+ celica gt-s or even the gt.
they have timing chains because they have variable valve timing (vvti) on the intake sprocket which retards and advances the timing of the valves depending on rpm for better power and fuel mileage. a belt is not suited for retarding/advancing the sprocket. the "L" in vvti-l stands for lift which it has both retard/advance on the intake timing but also a bigger cam lobe profile that ingages above 6000rpm which accounts for the 40hp difference between the engines. similiar to hondas i-vtec system.
