with lc engineering components and a turbo you can get about 175 hp...A friend built a pre runner with all the cool stuff..Man that thing was fast...Till he rolled it in a creek bed.

It will tell you everything you need to know about the 22RE from a performance standard. Did you know that Toyota actually made a turbochargeed version of this engine called the 22RTE? It was used on a select number of Toyota trucks from 1985-1987. I would use there stats as a starting point. The factory built engines had stronger internals and more to handle the turbo's power. The 22RTEs have been known to put out over 200 hp. You'll need to build your engine for turboing anyway so why not build it as close to the 22RTE's factory specs as possible?

these little engines are great runners but sadly they were not built for racing. there is one online with a rear wheel horsepower of over 220 HP. and the engine in it is worth 5times more than the vehicle is worth. with a descent performance engine a cam a header ported and polished intake and head and a nice cold air intake there is no reason u cant get 150 out of it a simpple port polished intake cold air intake and a header on a stock engine should get u around 135HP and about 30 mpg in a 2wd truck. that 220 HP engine mentioned above has a turbo high performance everything and its way to expensive and not even practical. turbos are not good for off road use not only that but u have to beef up the rears and the transmissions. and the ECU and the cooling radiators. your looking at about 10 grand plus worth of parts and work. u could stick a 350 chevy in it with just a trans upgrade and be alot happier.
