how long do corolla/prizm engines last?

The car I'm talking about is a geo prizm from 1990 and has 200,xxx miles and is surprizingly smooth for it's age and being a 4 cyl. I'm wondering how long they last for people who had or have them. Also I was wondering what to do with rust here and there and how that will impact the cars life in general. Also does the chassis rust as well?

Replace the oil and transmission. If do that first and continue to do that consistently, the engine should last at least another 100,xxx miles.

Refreshing isn't it? .. a cheap 1990 Geo prism with 200,000+ miles still up and running smoothly. Sort of make you wonder doesn't it? ...Like how did toyota ever manage to con the public into thinking only foreign cars were good. Very interesting indeed. Congratulations on owning a great American car...one that is 10 times what any cheap Corolla is today!

So congrats on buying a Domestic Car body with a Toyota motor in it! It is refreshing to see that one automaker (albeit a defunct one now) saw how Toyota's motors were much better than anything they could design/build.

The Chassis will rust but if it's had rustproofing it will be slow and shouldn't affect you too much. Unless you are in the Midwest or northeast. Where they salt the roads. Salt will rust out a frame fairly quickly.

So because of that the Motor very well could outlast the body! If you take care of it, you're looking at 500,000+.
