Spiral Out is pretty much right. The Hilux that you know and have seen in other countries was available here until 1994 as the Toyota Truck. It was replaced by a U.S. built version called the Tacoma- which is essentially the same truck as the current the current Hilux in other markets.
Hilux is the Equivalent to the Toyota Pickup (pre-Tacoma), then the tacoma, and also the 4runner (hilux surf), only disadvantage was overseas the hilux had crew cab's and diesel powered mini trucks.
