The fuel pump is located inside the fuel tank. You must remove the fuel tank to access the fuel pump.
Best if you can remove as much fuel as possible before starting the project. This will make handling the fuel tank easier.
Make sure you do this in an open area away from any ignition sources. No smoking. Have a fire extinguisher rated for flammable liquids on hand.
Remove the fuse to the fuel pump. Crank the engine until it no longer fires, this will depressurize the fuel system.
Put the rear of the car on jack stands. Disconnect the fuel lines. Some vehicles require a special tool for this. If your car requires this tool do not even attempt to disconnect the lines until you have one. You can find one at your local automotive parts store.
Disconnect the wiring harness and vent lines to the fuel tank.
Disconnect the fuel filler neck.
Support the fuel tank with a jack. A transmission jack works best but a floor jack with a piece of plywood will work in a pinch.
Unbolt ant release the fuel tank mounting straps and lower the fuel tank to the ground.
On the top of the fuel tank there is a locking collar. Use non sparking tools to release this collar. These are usually made from brass. However a rubber mallet and a block of wood will work in a pinch.
Once you remove the locking ring the fuel pump and fuel gauge sending unit lift out as a unit.
Sometimes these are sold as a unit, sometimes you can buy them separately.
Reverse these steps to reinstall the fuel tank.
Don't forget to reinstall the fuel pump fuse. On the first start turn the key to the on position for about 5 seconds before you start the engine. This will pressurize the system. Check for leaks and if all seems OK start the engine and you are done.
