If my toyota camry (1996) leaks oil, is it necessary to get an oil change every 3000 miles?

when i do get an oil change, by the time its ready for another one it is really low on oil. i put about 2 quarts in it every two weeks and i really dont know if an oil change is really needed. thanks!

fix the leak/one of these times the leak is going to open up and you will need an engine

well, the oil filter is till cleaning it getting dirty, so that will have to be changed, maybe get it fixed as that is a huge enviromental hazard and a waste of money to constantly be putting oil in.

as well, some dirty oil is still in there, and dirting up the entire contents, so yes you should still get your oil changed every 3000 miles

An Oil change won't be needed.

But you should change the filter every 3,000 miles. Pouring in 2 quarts every two weeks is like doing an oil change once a month.

But that won't stop the contaminants. So you'll have to keep changing the filter.

you are right - don't need an oil change - your oil is changing itself continuously. Most if not all of the contaminants are microscopic chemicals and will leak out with the oil - so contrary to popular opinion - changing the filter is not necessary either (maybe every 10-15,000 just to be sure). As long as you have an air filter keeping basic dirt out of the engine the need for oil filtration is minimal. The main reason for a full flow oil filter is to catch machining chips, honing grit, sand (from sand casting process) spiders, cigarette ashes etc that get built into the engine at the factory.

yea you are right the 3,000 mile oil change is unnecessary anyways these days but my car leaks oil too so i change the oil filter once a year
