1 of FOUR ox. sensor failing, melted into CC
Hi everyone..newbie here!
I bought my 2003 Rav4 used at 120K in February. I purchased an extended warrenty for 2 years to cover drivetrain only.
My check engine light came on about a month ago. Turns out its the oxygen sensor. There are four bolted on the catalytic converter. This is a 100-200$ part. Should be easy and cheap. Toyota dealer told me however the part had melted into the catalytic converter and can not be removed without comprmising the integrity of the unit. SO a 600$ converter and ALL 4 oxygen sensors must be replaced. With labor and other various costs it came to 1900. you HAVE to be kidding me. Also the converter has pallidium in it, thus the high cost. Dont they take trade in on these parts with pallidium. You know they arent tossing out the old converter without scrapping out the pallidium right? ALSO, why do all 4 sensors have to be replaced? cant the ones that have not melted into the converted by transfered to the new assembly? Im disgusted. Also, what is the big problem if I dont fix this. Will it effect my engine and the cars ability to perform? I was told I wouldnt make smog. However I JUST passed the smog less than a month ago to get my registration on the vehicle. Anyway, any help with this situation would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Heather
