How important is the rear locking diff on a Tacoma?

I live in Oklahoma. I don't rock crawl or get into much sand. but I find myself in mud quite often. My question is, i am looking at 07 Toyota Tacoma. 4.0L V6, 4X4. However, it is not the TRD package so it does not have the locking rear differential. I have heard it makes a big difference on 2 wheel drive trucks, but do you think I will miss it on a 4 wheel drive truck? Some say yes, some say no. Opinions?

Well, that depends.

I have no idea what kind of mud, or how deep. But a Locker will keep your tires moving (and the truck) where people without a locker would get stuck and end up spinning a wheel.

It can literally be the only thing keeping you moving.

Once you have it, you can't live without it. But if you never have it... you don't know what you're missing lol.

There are a ton of aftermarket sources for Lockers though. Anything from Air and Electric Lockers, to Limited Slips.

So I wouldn't worry about it coming without one. It's easy enough to add later.

If you are going to be around mud, snow, or slippery condition then it is very important! If the truck will only see the freeway and never get to go off road then don't worry about it.

It is VERY IMPORTANT in mud or snow.

Not having the TRD package isn't possible, all Toyotas come standard with'"The Toyota Rust Development package" and it has been proven to work well....
