1984 Toyota CelicaSupra















292,xxx miles.































I bought the car for $950 and I'm not sure if to invest money fixing it or save up for something a bit better. (im leaning towards option 2 lol)































Car is idling high it starts a 2k, and drops a bit as it warms up but never lower than 1,100 rpms. and I think is causing me to drop transmission every time I put it in gear because when I put it in gear I hear a loud thump and the car jerks a bit (it's automatic)































Also car is leaking a few drops of oil over night and has oil on top of the engine.















and over heats at high speeds.. at low speed it remains cool.































the car didn't pass smog and i'm sure it needs a tune up and I think a catalytic converter.















yes i know the car is a POS but i needed the ride































any ideas? lol thanks.

Sounds like you may have a head gasket leaking, I would get that checked out fast.

I agree with the last answer but if you decide to keep it, consider a used lowq mileage Japanese engine for your car. 3M-GEs haven't been used in years but you can find a low mileage one still. Headgasket will cost you about the same (if not more) and you will be out of a car for longer. Good luck.































BTW, your tranny is probably fine.The thunk and jerk when you shift is because the car is idling so high. Sounds like the previous owner was trying to hide something. $950? If you live in California, the seller is supposed to smog the car- not the buyer.

High idle and overheating can also be caused by a large vacuum leak either from a failed hose or line or a failed vacuum power brake booster. At the age of the vehicle I would replace every vacuum line and hose on it, they don't cost very much and can't hurt. To check the brake booster unhook the hose from it and plug the end and see if it runs any better. If you drive it like this be aware that you won't have power brakes while it is unhooked, so the pedal will be very hard to press..
