To do all of that will cost thousands of dollars. $4000 for a paint job, $1000 for decent rims... you sure you don't want to just upgrade the car? I thought about fixing up my old 96 Honda with paint rims sound system etc., but for $5000 with a trade I got an 03 VW with less mileage and a great sound system. I'd much rather have my VW than a tricked out Honda.

Wash and wax it. At most have it detailed at a body shop. Rims and all that, you can leave. Your son can pick out his own custom features. If my folks gave me that and I was 17, I'd be happy as a pig in sh*t and would settle for all stock.

Tell him: "Here's a free car". Nothing else. Don't put autozone crap on it. If he wants to crap it out then let him pay for it. It drives, it's free, otherwise he get's no car.

You don't say how much money you have to spend. Wheel packages (for decent wheels) are over 600 bucks...to essentially do the same thing that the stock steel wheels do.

my parents just gave me their used 99 camry

it was a free car. if i didnt like it i had to work to get a better one.

but here are some tips.

wash and wax. 30 mins.

you can take off the hub caps if he dosnt like it it kinda looks better

lights if they are foggy and yellow. get a car head light restoration kit. there are videos that teaches you how to do it on youtube.

and shine the tires

all that should cost you about 30 buck hey and do it with your son thats priceless
