Toyota's been around since the 1930's. Honda was founded in the late 1940's, but they only made scooters and motorcycles until the early 1960's when they started building cars.

Toyota started selling their cars in the Los Angeles area around 1963 or so, and they were a good buy.

I remember the first Honda car I saw, and that was around 1970. It was a real small little thing with an engine about the size of a motorcycle engine. They did not last, and did not sell well. Later larger models were vastly improved and Honda was on it's way to where they are now.
