when the key is turned It will either just click or the starter won' stop running

Starter solenoid,is the culprit in the click=nothing dept.it either has a weak connection r is bad,the whirring without engagement is the starter drive not engaging the flywheel {flexplate} teeth.Remove the starter & have it tested at Auto Zone or any rebuild shop.

bad starter, bang on the starter and it might start.
