Default Need help! please! 97' Celica. Speedometer not working, then transmission problem?
Today on my way to work, my speedometer stopped working. When I left the house it was working fine, but when i was maybe 200 yrds from work, it was on zero. (the drive distance is 7 miles) The overall performance of my car was ok, it was running fine. No issues whatsoever. So I pulled into the lot and left it, figuring I'd check the cables afterwards.































When I got out of work, and started my car- everything was ok. I left the parking lot and went to accelerate to 30, except that it wouldnt. The rpm's went immediately up to 5000, the speedometer was at zero, and i estimate that i was going about 5-10 mph, I let off the gas, coasted into the next parking lot and shut off the car.































What the hell happened? What is this? Someone please clue me in. I got a ride home and the car is still there. I cant afford to take it into a mechanic. The work will have to be done by myself and maybe my dad if he's in town.































i'm 23 and a girl. HELP!















well... i went to go pick up the car to look at it. and it suddenly started working. speedometer and transmission.































Wow. now i look like a crazy person to my dad.

hi there!































You Are Not Crazy!































This is a very common problem to Toyota's from the mid to late 1990's.































The speed sensor on the transmission is going bad or the sensor in the speedometer is going bad.































When the sensor does not work....your speedometer will go to zero and the transmission will not get a signal from the computer!































You need to take the vehicle to your local mechanic and have him scan it for any trouble codes. He will probably find a code for one of the sensors.































The mechanic can replace the failing sensor and you will be cruising safely again in no time at all.































You could also go to autozone or some parts stores and they will scan it for free!
