What's the difference between a toyota tacoma and tacoma prerunner?

Default What's the difference between a toyota tacoma and tacoma prerunner?
I'm interested in the Toyota Tacoma's, and when looking at some I noticed that the 2011 Tacoma brand new is about $3,000 less than a few '05 Tacoma prerunners I saw. So what's the difference? Is one considerably better than the other?

The PreRunner is a 2WD that has some of the features of the 4WD model. If you look at a PreRunner, It looks like a 4WD with the raised height, larger wheels, etc. There's even a TRD Off Road Package available for the PreRunner for those who really want to look the 4Wheel Drive part. Other than cosmetics, there really isn't any difference between the two. PreRunners are popular- which explains the high resale value but IMO I'd rather have the regular 2WD, same truck but since it's lower to the ground, fuel economy will be better as well as acceleration. If I wanted a raised truck, I'd buy the 4WD.

Tacoma could be the base model.































The Tacoma prerunners are v6 & 4x4 + other options. But it can vary.

A Prerunner is a Tacoma.































The Tacoma comes in several models































2WD, Regular Cab, Xtra Cab.































2WD XRunner Xtra Cab































2WD Prerunner Regular Cab and Xtra Cab































4WD Regular, Xtra, and Crew Cab.































The prerunner is going to have the extra clearance of the 4x4's. But it only comes with 2WD.































An important thing to remember when comparing prices.

Pre-runner is the same a any other Tacoma with the difference being this:































a typical super cab Tacoma 2 wheel drive has the 2.7L I4 and the 4x4 has the 4.0L V6, A pre-runner super cab has the 4.0L V6, the suspension and ground clearance of a 4 wheel drive, but its only a 2 wheel drive(front axle isn't powered).































What it comes down to is this, if you want a two wheel drive with the V6, you get a pre-runner. The heavier suspension and the V6 with 2 wheel drive gives it the towing capacity of the 4x4, but with 4x2 drive. No idea why they decided to call it a Pre-runner but its basically the V6 version of the two wheel drive tacoma.
