Go to a real mechanic, or better yet, have an OBD2 check done. With only 50,000 miles and acting like that I would be surprized if the cam belt slipped, but I wouldn't overlook the possibility. There are so many possibilities, use the OBD2 scan to narrow them down. Catalytic convertors are quite expensive, and too expensive if that really isn't the problem. AutoZone will do an OBD2 check free. Be sure to write down the trouble codes. Owning a code reader is a god idea. They aren't all that expensive compared to shop rates fordiagnosis and repair.
