The car has been parked and not driven for 5 years. The dealer says the timing belt should be changed due to the age and how long it's been sitting.

I believe it should be like 5 years if it hasn't been changed. I would check the belt if there's any wear and signs of aging on the belt. I would also change the gasoline in it cause that would be bad also.

The belt being made of rubber has most likely dry rotted while sitting for that long. It's worth an inspection.

Some cars sit on dealership lots that long. I would get the belt inspected before replacement. Most replace them around 40-50K miles.

I would go ahead and change it. Sometimes a visual inspection doesnt tell you everything you need to know. A rubber belt that has sit for 5 years, can and most likely has deteriorated in strength. If you are driving the car at anything over 35 MPH, and it breaks yo uare risking bending piston rods and a bunch of other things that could end up costing you alot more. This prolly isnt the answer you want to hear but I believe it the best answer.

I recommend it - 7 years is the maximum life of a timing belt. The engine is not an interference design (first source) so the engine should not be damaged if the belt fails. It will have to be towed and you will be without it for a few days, though, so you may want to just have it done when it is more convenient to you.
