It's tough to say what the "best" DIY truck bedliner kit would be as, quite frankly, they don't usually hold up that well if you are going to be putting your truck bed to a lot of use. DIY bedliner products (roll or spray) require a massive amount of prep work and patience in order to last for any length of time. They may not be able to withstand a lot of punishment so be prepared that you may to do touch-ups down the road so always purchase more than you need for the initial application.
It is not surprising that you had a bad experience with the quality of a truck bed liner kit that you purchase online due to the inferior quality of the chemical used as well as the application method. I would suggest that you contact an area professional applicator of spray-on bedliner products. Make sure you do your homework and check out their previous projects before making your decision -- a spray-on bedliner finished product is only as good as the applicator who sprayed it.
If you must go with a DIY bedliner product rather than a professionally-applied spray-on bedliner, please remember to prep, prep, and prep some more!
