The Prius is a fine winter car IF you put on either four proper snow tires or the Nokian WR-2g severe service all-seasons (The OE tires are good only for the mildest winters and then only when they're just about new). I've driven mine in blizzard conditions and on ice days and the vehicle stability control really keeps the Prius on the road. In some cases I've seen cars and trucks slide off the road in front of me when I didn't even think it was slippery.
Note that the ground clearance is that of a car, so winter off-roading is out. On pavement there aren't many vehicles that can match the Prius in winter conditions.
Also the Prius is the easiest to start car you'll ever have. Starts the same at -10 as it does at +70.
