Since it's an OBDII, it is best to use an OBDII scanner plugged into the receiver port and use the scanner to reset the stored code (ONLY AFTER you research the code and find out what the problem is that triggered the code-- otherwise the light will come back on!)

Disconnect the battery and let it sit for a while (perhaps overnight or at least for a couple of hours).

Of course there are other ways, but this is the easiest.

Take the battery negative cable off for 10 minutes. Turning off the light will not fix the problem. It might be better for you to leave the light on, have an OBD2 check done, fix what's wrong, then use the OBD2 scanner to turn off the light. Just for the heck of it, tighten up your gascap and see if the light goes out. Maybe I don't have to tell you this, but I will say it anyway- the check engine light means check the engine.

Most auto parts chain stores and Aamco shops will read the codes that are turning the light on and will attempt to reset it. If the problem is a "hard" failure the light will come right back on. Write down the codes (they will be in a single letter and four digit format, like P0171) so you will know what to do to correct the problem.

I strongly recommend not to disconnect the battery to reset the light. It usually works but never solves anything. You don't tell the doctor to get lost when he points out you have a suspicious lump, so why tell the OBDII system to get lost when it is telling you there is a problem with your car?
