The belt is loose, check the tensioner.

Usually a belt will squeal when it is too loose on the pulley. It needs to be tightened up slightly, unless this vehicle has an "automatic" belt tensioner. It's possible that the automatic belt tensioner isn't working, or the belt is completely worn out and needs to be replaced. You should be able to "deflect"















( push down ) the belt about 1/2" to 3/4" at the mid point between the pulleys. If you can deflect the belt more than that, it's too loose. You don't want the belt so tight that it puts a strain on the bearings in the pulleys. It;s also possible that the bearing is already out in the air compressor pulley and that's causing the belt to slip and makes it squeal. Let's hope this isn't the problem! Take it to a garage mechanic you trust and get their opinion. Good luck!

Your 1996 Camry has a flat belt for the A/C and alternator combined. If that belt is more than about five years old the squeal is your warning that it is time to replace it. Never over-tighten a belt - it is very hard on the bearings of the accessories it operates. Belt dressing is for preserving new belts and is at best a temporary fix for old ones.































However, if this just started after the belt was replaced or the alternator or compressor was replaced, it is likely the belt is under-tensioned. The old rule about pressing on the belt doesn't work with flat belts, instead the belt can be twisted with your fingers in the center of the longest span. If it twists only 90 degrees it is okay.

not only should you consider the possibility of the belt being loose, but the a/c clutch could be getting ready to lock up.
