This isn't a hard one to answer. The '05 are pretty quick even if they are boring. The AE86 is more of a great handler than a speed machine by today's standards. After all,it is 23 to 26 years old... depending on the year. The GT-S model was quick back in it's day with it's fuel injected twin cam 16 valve engine. The lower trim level SR5 model had a carbureted single cam 8 valve engine and was more economical than exciting. However, Toyota did make performance engines for the Corolla in markets outside of the U.S. They were all based on the the 4AGE used in the U.S. AE86 GT-S but with much more oomph. There is the suprcharged 4AGZE- which was also used in the MR2s as well and a 20 valve 4A-20 (also called the 4AGZE by some). That's right!! 5 valves per cylinder. Those two never made it to North American shores in stock form but can easily be thrown in a U.S. spec AE86 easily. Also, the 2005 Corolla use the same engines as the Celica GT. 2006 saw the introduction of the Corolla XRS- which used the same engine as the Celica GT-S, but was detuned 10 hp. Still, to answer your question, I have to say that the '05 Corolla would be faster.
