Maybe the O/D lockout switch is actuated. Is there a light on the dash saying overdrive off?
P.S. there is no 5th gear. The tranny goes into 4th, which is O/D, and then the torque converter locks. This lockup feels like another shift, which many people think is another gear change. If yours is not locking when it's supposed to, you may need to service it, or have it checked out by a shop.
