Default Toyota again recalls 1.5 million more defective cars. How do you think this will affect

sales of Toyota? It's hard to imagine that this massive recall will not affect people buying Toyotas, as it now seems to be more of a chronic pattern of defects emerging. Toyota has now recalled more than 11 million cars world wide. And it is rumored that millions more Corollas could be recalled at some point for defective steering as well. Do you think this latest report (see link) will continue to affect new Toyota car sales?

Joshua..there are more toyotas because Toyota is paying buyers to buy Toyotas by handing out incentives. No incentives...no buyers. That we will see soon.

yeah, Toyata is definitely screwing themselves over. I dont know what caused them to release defected cars and how they missed problems in manufacturing but this is going to hurt the consumer's trust in Toyata so sales are going to go down. No one wants to risk buying a car that doesnt work properly.

Well, since this recall is issued to 2004-2006 models, i don't think it will matter that much. Unless customers are looking to buy old cars from that specific model year..

truth is, camry is still the top seller, that safety issue did not really hurt it's sales. So I don't think this will cause a drop in sales. Recalls happen all the time...it's in every company. But i drive a camry, and never ran into any problems with it, so i'm pleased with it. After all it's all about the price and reliability.

However, with the new 2011 sonata coming out and looking good(and cheap), i might consider that one as well for my next car

Nope.

Even with these minor supplier quality issues Toyota's Quality far surpasses anything else out there.

Sure there will be a few people who switch. But more switch from GM and Ford to Toyota every day.

Toyota issues recalls for a reason...public safety. The last large recall Toyota had in January involved a total 7 reported cases of accelerator problems in Canada (where I'm from) and Toyota recalled 290,000 vehicles in Canada alone just to be on the safe side. It did hurt sales a bit, but it bounced right back after a few months. Toyota owners know they have a great car, and will keep buying Toyota's for years. I know this because I'm proud to say that I sell Toyota for a living, and still sell an average of 4-5 cars a week. The media can keep spinning Toyota recall junk all they like...but, fact of the matter is this...over the last 10 years Toyota has now had 65 recalls which involve a little over 11 million affected vehicles and have sold almost 21 million vehicles which means about 55% of there SOLD cars. Honda has had 118 recalls which involved a little over 9 million vehicles and they sold a little over 13 million units which means 67% of they're vehicles have been recalled.

GM has had 308 recalls which involved over 44 million cars and trucks affected and they sold 29 million vehicles which means those recalls accounted for 151% of they're vehicles were recalled.

Ford has had 242 recalls which affected about 44 million vehicles and about 41.5 million vehicles were sold which means 106% of they're vehicles were recalled.

Chrysler has had 232 recalls which affected 29.7 million vehicles and they sold 23.5 million cars which accounts for 126% of Chryslers vehicles were recalled.

So, If you look at the past decade's data on auto recalls, Toyota fare much better than their US counterparts, accounting for roughly 20% of recalls in the US as compared with the latter's 80%. Detroit has actually recalled more vehicles than it sold over the last ten years, Toyota (including the latest debacle) has now recalled 55% and only Honda 7% On the face of it, Honda streaks the most reliable, but past experience suggests that the maximum impact on an assemblers market share is just 2%, and that has been in very extreme cases like the Ford/Firestone recall after 270 fatalities.

Stats to back up the points made above:

1) In the past 10 years (00-09), the US big 3 accounted for 80% of the 1,100 recalls vs. the Japaneese big 3 at 20%.

2) The frequency of recalls per vehicle is the lowest at Toyota. GM's risk of recall is 2.7x higher than Toyota. (Honda is next best after Toyota).

Why should it? That BULL**** pedal recall didn't hurt their sales at all. They're as strong as ever. Oh, is that 11 million? Boy, Toyota a sure has long, LONG way to go before they top Detroit.

I completely understand that auto shops using the wrong brake fluid when flushing or topping off can cause problem's, but....it sounds like a convenient excuse for using cheap rubber inside the brake components to me. I mean, wouldn't every auto maker have this problem if there were that many incompetent auto repair facility's!? Also, I work at a high end repair shop and we only keep 2 kinds of brake fluid...because... brake fluid is not THAT technical like gear oils or auto transmission fluid. We have a wealth of information about what vehicle takes what in print, PC programs, professional website's we pay for and ofcourse the telltale print molded right into the cap for the brake fluid!

I think Toyota will see another dip in sales but doubt it effect's them for too long. As usual.

This will hurt Toyota even more. They currently have the highest recall rate in automotive history having recalled 40% of what they made since 1998 and now it may go to 41%. Yes all companies have had recalls BUT nobody but Toyota has a 40% rate.

I see that Toyota Obsession has got around your block and answered 2 or 3 times with different accounts. it is PATHETIC that Toyota has to use people answering the same question several times with different accounts to make it seem like there is a lot of answers from different people......

I'm glad I didn't have Toyota Obsession aka Ruth's math teacher lol ......"126% of Chryslers vehicles were recalled."

For GM she claims "151% of they're vehicles were recalled."

Oh and she claims Ford recalled 106% lol lol lol lol.

As I said, I am very happy we didn't have the same math teacher hehehe......

I think it will further reduce car sales.

And I hate to break it to Toyota and others that answered but Camry ISN'T the top seller. Toyota conveniently leaves OUT pickup trucks when they make that claim......

Ford F-series trucks have outsold all vehicles car or truck every year for the past 35 years in a row. That isn?t possible without being the best and most reliable vehicle there is.

There now we have established the fact that for 35 years in a row FORD has had the top seller.
