The struts do have rubber dampers at either end of the travel. If they have failed either on its own or the dampening elements have become weaker and hence the travel is more the clanking is heard

Toyotas are notorious for strut defects in all their models. My then new Solara struts went bad at only 4000 miles. Toyota blamed it on me and would not cover it. They lost a customer forever, and since I buy expensive cars regularly...they will lose a hundred thousand from me or more, not counting how many I will forever turn away from their shoddy non democratic practices. Toyota is like a communist regime. Everything wrong with your car is your fault....never theirs.

The same thing happened on my 2007 Camry. I would hear a clunking sound in the rear end of the car when going over a bump. It ended up being a rear bushing. I had it replaced at the toyota dealer and only cost $86.00. LOL and i will never buy another toyota. Just kidding! As far as Mr. Buy expensive, on your response on never buying another new toyota. Check the price of a Nissan Maxima or Volkswagen CC, which is similar szied and quite alot more in price. Struts will be alot less than the minimum price difference of 12k or 13k between a new camry or another similar size model.
