The math is easy enough. What you have to do is decide which mileage figure you want - city or freeway driving. If all you do is city driving, no problem; just fill up the next time, record the mileage or use the two trip odometers, and divide that by the amount you need to refill the tank later. If you want a true freeway number, fill up just before a long trip and do the math before resuming city driving. I would expect 30 city and 35 highway mpg although my 2005 gets up to 38 when it is really hot.
As far as mechanical faults - you aren't going to have any if you keep to a maintenance schedule.
