There are two places to attack this; The gauge in the instrument panel may be defective. Rap on it and see if it changes. If it does, replace it. Or, The fuel level sender in the gas tank may have gone bad. Pull it out and replace it. Those very simple units are very expensive- over $140 for the part from Toyota. I got a used replacement for one in an '86 Corolla for $11 at a salvage yard. There's also where I learned how to remove it without risking my car first. Look in Chilton's Auto Repair manual to see how to get at yours. For the '86, you pull out the back seat cushion (easy) take out a handful of screws on top of the gastank (NO SMOKING!), and unplug and pull out the float/rheostat fuel level sending unit. I hope yours is that simple if that's where the problem is. If you have to take the gastank down toget at yours have a shop do the work- it's hard and dangerous.
