DO NOT go to the dealer for this !!!































The Toyota dealer will charge FOUR TIMES what it will cost to fix it at a reputable local mechanic shop.

If it a 1996 or later model, the check engine light will come on and report P0420 or P0430 (Catalyst system efficiency below threshold, bank 1 or 2 respectively). It is no longer possible for a catalytic converter to plug up without bringing in a converter code since the advent of OBDII in 1996.































However, those codes are not often caused by the converter itself. The forward O2 sensor is always a better suspect, and I hear (but have no experience) that Camrys often have exhaust leaks that will trigger those codes.































The Raven is right about avoiding the dealer in any case. Independent muffler shops are the way to go.

micheal is right on. let me add that if a code 420 is present, it isn't necessarily the catalytic converter. dealers will tell you this because 99% of the time replacing an o2 sensor there will lead to breaking it.

True about the codes, usually.















When a cat is bad, it is plugged. This means your exhaust cannot escape and your engine may idle fine, but not rev up properly. You can "feel" the back pressure.















True the stock cat is expensive from Toyota, as are OEM replacements.















One quick and cheap repair is to "Gut the cat" then add an aftermarket inline cat. You didn't say the year, but if it is post 1996, you may get a "Check engine" light and have trouble passing inspection.
